Once being one of the powerful large monasteries in Mongolia.Ongiin Monastery was ruined during the Stalinist Purges of mid 1960’s. It is a ruin of big monastery of Bari YonzonKhamba on the bank of the Ongiinriver. This monastery has 28 templesand other buildings on the south slope of the rocky mountain like Balsa country and stupas haven’t broken. The monastery had about 100 monks. One of the famous places is Bayanzag, bottom of Ancient sea which excited 60-70 million years ago where a lot of Palentological findings have been discovered. The place is known as Flaming Cliffs so named by Roy Andrew Chapman, an American explorer, who visited Mongolia in 1920s.
