Mongolia is a landlocked unitary sovereign state in East Asia. Its area is roughly equivalent with the historical territory of Outer Mongolia, and that term is sometimes used to refer to the Mongolian People's Republic. It is located between China to the south and Russia to the north. While it does not share a border with Kazakhstan, Mongolia is separated from it by only 36.76 kilometers (22.84 mi)
we travel on dirt tracks to visit the Khongorynels which are some of the largest and most spectacular sand dunes in Mongolia. Also known as the ‘singing dunes’, they are up to 800 m high, 20 km wide and about 100 km long. Climbing to the tops gives spectacular views of the desert. Camels, gazelles and wild asses do the steppe.
Now in central Mongolia, we pass through Tsetserleg, the capital of aimag Arkhangai. Picturesque mountains surround the town and a small temple overlooks the tree-lined streets. As we travel further northwest, the khangai Nuruu mountains can be seen to the south. We continue to TerkhiinTsagan Nuur (lake Tariat), or great white lake. The fresh water lake and the volcanic area around it is highlight of Arkhangai. Formed by lava flows from a volcanic eruption, the lake area is part of the unspoilt TsagaanNuur National Park and is perfect for camping. The region offers wonderful hiking and swimming opportunities.
