Dolpo Shey-Gompa Monastery Trek - (25 Days )

Photo Gallery

Located in mid-western Nepal, Dolpo was opened for trekking only since 1990. A trans-Himalayan and remote region, Dolpo is still a mysterious land that has its unique culture, traditions and values of life. Dolpo Shey Gompa Monastery Trek is a highly satisfying spiritual trek. You will be introduced to remnants of Tibetan culture. Dolpo is considered one of the few other places where Animism religion is still being followed. Guru Rinpoche is believed to have founded settlement in Dolpo to provide shelter to Tibetans during war. Dolpo remained cut off from the outer world for long due to the challenges of High Passes and mountains. We will choose ancient salt trade route used by locals for trade with neighboring Tibetans. Shey Gompa Monastery lies in the upper Dolpo region. Dolpo experiences minimal rainfall as it lies in the rain shadow of Dhaulagiri Mountain and thus Upper Dolpo trek is possible also in rainy season. Dolpo is famous for blue sheep, elusive snow leopards and monasteries.

Upper Dolpo Trek continues through the secret valley. The popularity of Upper Dolpo increased after Novelist Peter Matthiessen depicted its beauty in his work ‘The Snow Leopard’.  Life in Dolpo was also well portrayed in Oscar nominated movie The Caravan.

Alaya Holidays operate 25-days Upper Dolpo Shey Gompa Monastery Trek. Shey Gompa is also known as Crystal Mountain. High priest called Lama observes daily worship in Shey Monastery. The Lama dwells in Red hermitage called Tsakang Gompa. Shey Gompa belongs to Chaiba sect who follows Padma sambhava. Shey Gompa is the first Kagyupa monastery built in the region. We can observe Animism religion in Shey Gompa.
