Nepal entails its history way before America was even discovered so it would not be a stretch to say that Nepal is one of the countries with oldest and longest history in the world.
Nepal is a multilingual, multiethnic, multiracial and multi-religious country with much respect among people of different caste and culture. The history of Nepal is basically influenced by the neighboring countries like India and China (Tibet). The History of Nepal could be analyzed from different lenses from culture to the person who is head of the nation.
There are many stories and predictions behind the nation being named ‘Nepal’. Nepal being the country of Himalayas, some people say the name might have been derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Nipalaya’ which means at the foot of the mountains. Apart from that some people also infer that the name might have been derived from the Newari people who are the major inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley. Their ethnic language has a word ‘Nepa’ and its meaning is the country of the middle zone. Similarly, there are many theories as such.
The history of Nepal could be trace back to 11,000 years ago as shown by the Neolithic tools found in the Kathmandu Valley. This indicates that Himalayan region of the country has been accommodated by people for at least 11,000 years. The first inhabitants of Nepal and around were from Indus Valley civilization. As for the authentic information, Hodgson inferred in 1847 that Kusunda people from proto-Australoid origin were properly the early people who lived here.
Before Nepal was unified as one; it was divided into various nations (Rajyas). Before the unification, Nepal basically referred to the Kathmandu Valley and the surroundings. The History of Nepal is long all of the records has not been maintained. However, the history of Nepal could be documented from the Licchavi dynasty. Apart from that Nepal saw faces of many other dynasties like Thakuri dynasty, Malla Dynasty, and Shah Dynasty. Among them Shah Dynasty has a major impact on the history of Nepal as the country enters the modern period of Nepal’s history with the unification of the country by Prithvi Narayan Shah. The unification of the nation started the Gorkha rule then came the Rana rule and again in 2007, Nepal saw democracy under the monarchy of Shah King.
After the introduction of democracy, Nepal faced many political ups and downs. In 1996, the communist party of Nepal started a civil war which they called people’s war. Apart from all these political stuff, June 1, 2001, marks one of the major happenings in the history of Nepal. On that very day, prince Dipendra went on a shooting spree and killed 9 members of the royal family. However, the story behind this royal massacre has not been solved yet in an authentic way.
After the massacre, Nepal became Kingdom only until 2007, On May 28, 2008, Nepal became Federal Democratic Republic. After all those history gone through the years, Nepal is still growing and making its history one after another.
